Agricultural knowledge and vegetables
The purpose of all three gardens is to provide the
students with agricultural knowledge and to produce fruit and vegetables for
the school kitchens. In the two gardens in and near the school, many kinds of fruit
and vegetables are grown, such as tomatoes, egg plant, beans, potatoes, papayas
and bananas. The garden close to the school is financed by the German NGO ‘Foerderverein
Myanmar’.
The small garden on the school campus itself is an initiative by the Dutch NGO
World Child Care, with its water tank financed by the German NGO.
The ‘Horticulture’ is a vast, beautiful piece of land
at the feet of the Shan Hills, with a lovely creek running through it. The
greater part of this plantation is covered in a variety of small orchards. As a
result, throughout most of the year, the harvest of tropical fruit is possible.
And you will also find a diverse variety of vegetables here. The land was
generously donated in 2008 by a private donor, named U Maung Maung Gyi.
Mud-houses
In an ongoing project, called ‘Eco-village’, people
from our school build mud-houses. This project is linked to the CPME project, in
which students work on practical life skills.
The mud-houses are kept cool naturally, even in the heat of the
summer. The students who work on this project, produce their own charcoal and
organic fertilizer. All our gardening is done using bio-energy. This means we
do not use any non-organic fertilizers or pesticides.
Agricultural training
Often, our lecturers present seminars on ecological
farming, protection of the environment and the dangers of pollution. Currently,
for example, we are presenting agricultural training to 30 participants for the
duration of six months. Besides the above mentioned skills the 30 students will
learn how to replant deforested land.
Training and meditation centre
Meanwhile, the ‘Horticulture’ has become a training
and meditation centre for PDO
High School students,
teachers and staff members.
